Our Town
Since even people who've grown up here in Boston seem never to have heard of Roslindale, and since the person who has snagged the roslindale.com domain seems not to have done much with it, I decided today (10/24/98) to add some content to the site about our town.
Frankly, I don't know too much about the history of Roslindale, but I do know that it borders on Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, West Roxbury and maybe even Brookline though I'm not sure about that. It's considered part of Boston, but it has its own little downtown area and a commuter rail stop. Via commuter rail we're three stops (less than 15 minutes) from Back Bay/South Station. The houses are on the large size... big Victorians mostly from the 20's I'd say. Some, like ours, are single family homes, many others are double and triple family homes, or broken up into condos. It seems that Roslindale has a good side of the tracks and a bad side.... I think the area bordering on Mattapan is much less affluent than the area where we live.
Our part of Roslindale is close to the Arnold Arboretum (which, being part of Harvard has it's own website, but I'll have to look up the URL). The Arboretum is something like 300+ acres and is connected to the emerald necklace. This means, essentially, that we can walk from our home, up to the Arb, and stay pretty much on forested paths all the way down to the Boston Common Gardens near Fenway if we wish.
We also have a supermarket we can walk to. It has excellent produce, mostly organic, and lots of other healthy-type food items. It is great to have a neighborhood supermarket within walking distance rather than just a little convenience store to walk to. We have a swell cafe, just across from the commuter rail station, lots of nice bakeries including our own Lebanese grocer/Pita bakery where you can buy olives quite inexpensively. They even have fresh dates still on the twigs in season!
In short, Roslindale is swell and we're glad we moved here. If anyone reading this is thinking about relocating to this part of the world, we'd be happy to supply more info on Roslindale and to put you in touch with the brilliant buyer's broker who helped us find our incredible house. He's a terrific guy and really knows the area.
Soon, I'll be putting up some pages here for some of our local businesses that I think are pretty nice.
